FLAMENCO WITH VICTORIO

Victorio Korjhan

 

Former soloist of the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, and former scholarship student at Juilliard, Sarah Lawrence College, and the Martha Graham School, Victorio later studied flamenco in Spain for seven years with numerous renowned teachers  in Sevilla and Madrid. While in Madrid, he formed his own traditional flamenco company, and further on created a dance company for a weekly show on national television in Spain. For the program, he choreographed dances ranging from jazz and ballet to flamenco and contemporary dance.

In addition, Victorio wrote and choreographed two dance-dramas for television in Madrid and Amsterdam.

Victorio has performed throughout the U.S. and Europe with guest appearances at Carnegie Hall, Radio City, Madison Square Garden, Avery Fisher Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Hollywood Bowl, the MGM Hotel, La Scala, the Vienna Opera House and the Royal Albert Hall in London. He has also choreographed for Columbia and United Artists in Hollywood, and coached athletes, singers and actors, including Tony Curtis, Ava Gardner, Anthony Quinn, James Gandolfini, Brooke Shields and John Turturro. 

For his achevements as a dancer and choreographer, Victorio has received letters of recommendation from Charlton Heston, Yul Brenner, Dame Irene Worth, the directors Geogre Wolfe, Frank Schaffner, David Lean, and the film producer, Sam Spiegel.

 

Victorio has taught Spanish dance to soloists of the Bolshoi Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and to the Broadway cast of "Forever Tango." He has also given master classes in flamenco at universities and dance academies throughout the U.S., including the Alvin Ailey School, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Ballet Hispanico, American Ballet Theatre School, Peridance, John Jay College, Northwestern and Northeastern Universities, Cornell, Harvard, the Boston Conservatory, and the School of the Performing Arts. In addition, he has been a guest teacher for The Dance Educators of America, the Chicago National Association of Dance, the Dance Teachers Summit, and is a long-term faculty member of Steps on Broadway in New York.

 

In April 2014, Victorio was honored at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York by the two world champion ballroom couples in the amateur and professional divisions for teaching them Spanish dance. (Dancers: Troels and Ina; and Slavik and Karina.)

 

Victorio has completed two film scripts, one of which was selected from 1,200 entries in a worldwide screenplay competition that depicts the lives of a gypsy flamenco family caught up in the Spanish Civil War. He is currently working on a third screenplay about the French Resistance during the Second World War.
